Chartered Marketer: recognizing professionals

Many South African marketers have an IMM degree or diploma tucked away in their resumes. Now the Institute of Marketing Management, after years of effort together with the Marketing Federation of South Africa (now defunct) and the Services Sector Education and Training Authority, gives marketers the opportunity to take their professional status to the next level by adding the letters CM (SA) behind their names.

In their words:

The Chartered Marketer (SA) sets an industry standard for the recognition of professional competence of individuals who have followed a career in marketing and have gained their knowledge through formal and non-formal learning processes.  They have also demonstrated their competence through the practical application of the knowledge thus gained.

There are currently 254 Chartered Marketers in South Africa.

Here’s what you need to become a CM:

  • MBA in Marketing or Honours in Marketing
  • Certain qualifications will stand in your stead towards Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
  • 5 years of marketing management experience
  • A record of ethical and professional conduct

You will then need to:

  • Apply
  • Perform a self-evaluation
  • Develop a portfolio of evidence (including an examination)
  • Be reviewed by a panel of peers
  • Subscribe to an established code of conduct
  • Attend workshops

The entire process takes approximately 6 weeks, depending on the eagerness of the candidate.

Julius recommends Nandos for change

Here it is: the ad that got the ANCYL’s knickers in a knot and made Julius Malema fear the chicken, calling the ad “disgusting”.

Sadly, the ad has been pulled after Julius and his comrades threatened “militant action”.

Nando’s marketing manager Sylvester Chauke said:

“Our advertisements are not a stab at Julius Malema at all. What is it that Nando’s said in the advert that is negative about him?… If only I could have an answer to that.”

Don’t be so chicken Julius, it’s just a bit of fun.

What exactly is Coca Cola red?

Frank Robertson first penned the Coca Cola trademarked logo seen above. He was Coca Cola inventor John Pemberton’s book keeper – and he had excellent penmanship. The logo above is shown in Red Spencerian script.

Red is the colour that instantly identifies Coca Cola as a brand, and the company has seldom strayed from this firmly held brand guideline. This consistency is part of the reason why Coca Cola is such a significant global brand.

Coca Cola was also attributed with changing the colour of Santa Clause himself from green to red – although this falls into the realm of urban legend.

What is the official Coca Cola red? Here’s an official notification about how the logo should be presented:

Description of Mark: The mark consists of the words “COCA-COLA” against a background of bubbles and curved horizontal ribbons in various colors. Color is claimed as a feature of the mark. The curved horizontal ribbons behind the words “COCA-COLA” are in dark red (Pantone Matching System 484) alternating with Coke Red. The curved horizontal ribbons below the words “COCA-COLA” are in dark red (Pantone Matching System 484), silver with white dots and a white swath (the silver is Pantone Matching System 8001), Coke Red, white, and yellow (Pantone Matching System 116). The words “COCA-COLA” are in white with edging in black and silver (the silver is Pantone Matching System 8001).

To add to the debate, this post indicates that in fact there is no official “coke red”.

Shocking Keira Knightley ad

CUT is a shocking and brilliant two-minute TV and cinema ad starring Keira Knightley. The ad, directed by BAFTA-winning director Joe Wright, highlights the ongoing struggle to end domestic violence in support of the charity Women’s Aid.
